Baby afghans (first post)

Just wanted to share something I finished over the weekend. I've done this pattern twice, now (Rock-a-bye rainsong from Leisure arts) with different yarns, and it was interesting to see how differently the blankets turned out.

This one I finished 3 years ago, for my son, and it's in TLC Cotton Plus:

It's relatively heavy but has held up well.

This one I finished this weekend, for the daughter of my college roommate, and it's in Red Heart Soft Yarn:

It turned out a lot puffier than the other one!

Both are very nice. I like that pattern.

Yarn and color can make a huge difference in the finished project. That's one of the things I like about crocheting. You can use the same pattern a dozen times and it can look totally different.

This is the only time I've managed to use the same pattern twice. I'll definitely keep the yarn more in mind next time. Thanks!

I love that pattern! I've made it in both the blue scheme, and in a purple/yellow/varigated scheme (looks better than it sounds :)).

You did a great job!

Thanks! Some of the hard part was finding the right shades of yarn. I'd love to see the purple/yellow/varigated--sounds neat!

Very pretty! I love the stich pattern and the colorations. I'll bet it's cozy as all get out in the Red Heart Soft. I used that yarn on a poncho I made for a friend and just loved it. I do wish that there was a wider range of colors available in that yarn line though.

What kind of a stitch was this blanket done in? It's one I am unfamiliar with, and is very attractive!

The Red Heart Soft is cuddly, but I actually prefer the weight of the TLC cotton one (good thing that's the one for my son!). I picked the Red Heart Soft because of the colors, actually; I wanted something a little more girly, and this color set really worked for me.

For the most part it's double crochet with chains, but the long stitches are called long double crochet: YO, insert hook in ch 1 row below the row you normally work on, YO and pull a loop through, (YO and pull through 2 loops on hook) twice. Sort of like a triple crochet except you anchor through a row down in the middle of the stitch. Goes quickly once you get the hang of it.

Thank you!
