My current WIP

So I got the idea of playing with crocheted motifs but in a different way.

DSCN0852

There's still a lot more to do.

DSCN0851

It's all going to be mounted and sewn onto a black canvas. That I have to make.

DSCN0850

Each flower is individually made, washed, pinned, starched, dried, and then sewn to the whole.

DSCN0849

Total, it's going to be six feet wide, by three feet high. I really like the dichotomy of a very simple image that is still extremely complex.

DSCN0848

That's all for now. Thank you.

What an amazing project, it's going to be incredible looking when it's done. How do you plan to use it?

Thank you so much. Hopefully this is the beginning of a series of wall hangings. The big dream is a gallery showing. There's currently a trend for crochet/knitting as art forms. Some of it, I really like. Some of it, I really don't. But... the fact that it's currently a trend is a good thing. I've always had this dream of doing this, but I never really had the right idea. But now... now I think I do. And what's in my head is all about using traditional techniques and styles, but in a new and different way.

The three dimensional quality makes for interesting wall hangings. I've seen pictures of the hyperbolic plane crochet which is really sculpture if it's anything--but I like your idea of using the more traditional shapes/techniques and doing something unusual with them. I hope you get to a showing!

Right now, the most popular crochet artist out there is Olek. (http://www.lostateminor.com/2011/08/11/oleks-incredible-crocheted-art/ ) I was talking about her with my best friend the other day. He's got his masters in art. As an artist, it's kid of interesting. As a crocheter, it's dull as shit. It's nothing but triple crochet filet mesh. All of it is just triple crochet filet mesh. I'd rather do both technically and artistically interesting.

I hadn't heard of her, but this isn't really my field :) But the stuff definitely seems more conceptual than an art form that investigates the tactile qualities that crochet can bring to a project. I like it when an artist really masters her craft, whatever it may be, it has a more universal appeal imo.
