Crocheted... kidney bean?

Hi all, I need some help. I have a pregnant friend who I want to shower with crocheted gifts, but I've managed to restrain myself to just a few things so far. One of the things I really, really want to make is basically a crocheted kidney bean. (She's calling the little one Bean until she finds out the sex and gives it a proper name, but I get the feeling the nickname's going to stick.) Unfortunately it appears that not many people want to make crocheted kidney beans (can't imagine why) and I can't find a good pattern. I tried to make it up myself, but nothing came out terribly bean-like. I'm having trouble making the kink in one side while keeping the other side curved. Can anyone help me?

Are you going for more of a 3D appearance or just a silhouette?
Cause I would check out patterns for hearts and just leave off the pointy end.
Something like this...not perfect...but a start

I want it to be 3D. An amigurumi kidney bean would be ideal. I'll take a look at heart patterns, thanks!

I can't believe I left off the link.....
Let me try that again.

there, I think leaving the pointy end off and rounding it out a bit more might work.

I don't have an actual pattern, but could you use a technique for turning a heel in a sock (extra short rows on one side)? I think if you took a sock, shortened it a bit, stuffed it and closed off the ends, it would be kind of bean shaped. Maybe?

Long-ways?

I don't know what size you're thinking of, but I had an idea for a different approach you could take. What if instead of crocheting in the round (that's what I've gathered from the post), you could make 1 or 2 pieces and add a seam. Then you could crochet the longway (like you would for the stripes in this scarf: http://www.piece-by-piece.net/Patterns/fp09.htm) and shape it as you went.

conceivably, I would htink that you could make a kidney by starting out with a circle... like start with:

6 in a magic circle
2 in every stitch around
1 in the first stitch 2 in the second around
2 in the first 2 stitch 2 in the third around

keep increasing like that until it's about the circumference you want then do two or three sc around ... then it seems like when you get to the bend if you just do slip stitches or sc where the bend is, and sc or hdc on the outside that it will bend a little. I'd say maybe do that for 5 or 6 rounds? then sc around the same number of times you did between the last increase and the bend. Then start your decreases to close off the top. Stuff it before you totally close off the top of course. Maybe put some safety eyes on it too before you stuff it completely.

PS... I dont' think i has to bend a whole lot. Some of it' bend you can work into it while you're stuffing it. If you stuff it tight enough, that bend will stay with the slight stitch bend to help it want to.

Just an idea...

Perhaps just crochet a short tube, and on one side wrap yarn around the middle of a row or two (to make the kink) and stuff tightly?

Good luck with this!!
